Upcycled Accessories

Upcycled fashion is one thing, reusing cloth, after market end bits, new designs and product reclamation to save and reuse.  Yet there is a whole other side to being fashionably upcycled.  Accessories!!!  Yeah you heard me, everything from bracelets and earrings to wallets and cellphones is being remade.  How will you accessorize?

Waste to Wealth Tour Last Updated on 2011-10-09 00:00:00 Conserve India is an industrious upcycling business formerly based in Delhi, but now located in Bahadurgarh, Haryana, India. The Upcycling Portal posted an article about their work that you can read here. The organization also worked to try to upcycle waste from the 2010 Commonwealth Games which you can read more about here. A few months ago I received this notice from Conserve about "Waste to Wealth" tours that the company was going to be hosting in and around Delhi. Here is what the notice says: "A learning journey for the eco-minded tourist, the Waste to Wealth tour brings you through the process of how discarded plastic bags can be converted into high quality fashion products in a way that benefits both the environment and slum dwellers. Also experience firsthand the problems the ragpicking community face through a visit to a local slum." Here are the highlights: SHOPPING! The tour... More »

Conserve India Upcycles the 2010 Commonwealth Games Last Updated on 2010-11-24 00:00:00 In 2007, Australian sustainability professional, Liz Franzmann, was introduced to Anita and Shalabh Ahuja from Conserve India while lecturing on sustainable events at the Indian Institute of Technology in Delhi. During their conversation a seed of an idea was born: could they promote upcycling by making special products out of Commonwealth Games waste? Although they all went back to their respective lives in Delhi and Melbourne, they remained in contact and the idea stayed with them. In 2010, Liz successfully applied for an Australian Government Endeavor Award to help Conserve India turn the idea into a reality. Why this project? Why now? Around the world there is an increasing need to address the environmental impacts of human consumption. Upcycling organisations across the globe are responding to this challenge. Major sporting events are a powerful platform for demonstrating... More »
upcycled jewelry dot com Last Updated on 2009-04-13 22:17:50 So what do you do with all that unused, outdated computer equipment lying around your house? For jewelry designers Jacob and Michelle Fausset of Upcycled Jewelry, the answer is pretty simple, turn it into jewelry. Jacob and Michelle Fausset have introduced Upcycled Jewelry, a line of jewelry made from circuit boards found in salvaged electronics. The company makes a stunning variety of earrings and necklaces. As the owners of a small business that manages foreclosed properties, every month the company accumulates nearly 5,000 pounds of trash. The trash is then separated and recycled when possible, but once the electronics are taken apart and recycled if not in usable shape, the circuit boards are often left over. This led to the couple starting a business to put all those leftover circuit boards to good use. Enter Upcyled Jewelry, a line of funky yet elegant handmade jewelry that finds... More »
Monsoon Vermont Last Updated on 2009-04-13 21:43:02 Monsoon Vermont is a distributor of upcycled products made in Jakarta, Indonesia. Their offices are located in Jamaica, Vermont. They make bags, umbrellas, backpacks, wallets and more! Here's a little more about them: Founded in 2005 by Julia Genatossio, Monsoon Vermont sells items made from nonrecyclable plastic collected by scavengers from the streets, landfills, and waterways of Jakarta, Indonesia's capital city with more than 9 million inhabitants. The trash is triple-washed, then sewn collage style into messenger bags, wallets, umbrellas, computer bags, backpacks, shower curtains, wastebaskets, travel wallets, and more. Dubbed "Trashion™," combining trash and fashion, the items create sustainable work for those at the bottom of the economic spectrum. Before moving to Vermont, Genatossio worked in crisis management for Save the Children UK, where she developed sustainable... More »
