Upcycled Fashion

In the fashion world, Upcycling is not just functional, it's stylish too.  As more and more designers re-examine their manufacturing processes many move towards upcycling, finding ways to take those old clothes, or old fabrics, and create something beautiful.  Some are even going as far as to re-imagine the way we make clothes, searching out more re-useable materials.  The great thing about upcycled fashion is that it represents both sides of the upcycled coin: the large scale systems changing how things are made and re-designing the fashion industry, and the indivdual user taking the initiative to upcycle their life, one outfit at a time.  Here's some of whats out there.

Waste to Wealth Tour Last Updated on 2011-10-09 00:00:00 Conserve India is an industrious upcycling business formerly based in Delhi, but now located in Bahadurgarh, Haryana, India. The Upcycling Portal posted an article about their work that you can read here. The organization also worked to try to upcycle waste from the 2010 Commonwealth Games which you can read more about here. A few months ago I received this notice from Conserve about "Waste to Wealth" tours that the company was going to be hosting in and around Delhi. Here is what the notice says: "A learning journey for the eco-minded tourist, the Waste to Wealth tour brings you through the process of how discarded plastic bags can be converted into high quality fashion products in a way that benefits both the environment and slum dwellers. Also experience firsthand the problems the ragpicking community face through a visit to a local slum." Here are the highlights: SHOPPING! The tour... More »

Upcycling with Style(ists) Last Updated on 2011-07-03 00:00:00 I was not expecting the invitation that arrived in Berkana’s inbox late last year to give an upcycling workshop for 100 of Redken UK’s top clients. I still haven’t any idea how the company learned about our work to re-imagine trash but the practice fit well with the theme of their 2011 annual conference: Inspiring the Future. At first, I wasn’t sure about working with Redken, given that it is a big corporation that their profit generating activities do not likely include dumpster diving. One of the key principles that we have been using within the Upcycling Initiative is to start with the waste we generate ourselves. So it was a little frustrating when our contacts at Redken UK explained that it would be impossible for conference participants or organizers to source waste for the workshop (given that they were flying from England). In the end we came up with a great solution... More »
WabiSabi Recycled Fashion Show Last Updated on 2011-06-14 00:00:00 Started as a small community fundraiser, the WabiSabi Fashion Show has become an annual must see event in Moab, UT a town known for its extreme recreation. The fashion show brings out the extreme in winter entertainment, which every year promises to be more extravagant and eclectic than ever. Each year artists and designers create outrageous theme based-fashion lines that are auctioned off as a fundraiser for Moab’s nonprofit organizations. Fashion designers whose intricate outfits are crafted by hand and only from recycled materials have sold for more than $600. Outfits from previous shows have included gladiators costumed in a kaleidoscope armor made from aluminum cans, dresses glittering with patterns made from smashed mirrors, and a "fur coat" made entirely from kids' stuffed animals. The 2011 fashion show theme was "Intergalactic" with each designer creating out of this world... More »

Check out Emiliana's website. She even has a little kit she sales so that you can make your own panties.
