Oh . . . I'm so mad I don't even know where to begin!!! Last week a friend of mine told me that this guy named Glenn Beck (who I suppose is some sort of Rush Limbaughian type) ran a whole program ranting against the amazing video The Story of Stuff (featured here on the Upcycling Portal). He had his panties all in a bunch because they've been showing The Story of Stuff in schools and supposedly "indoctrinating" all of our young people with harebrained leftist ideas (Marxism for kids he calls it). So, rather than just making a video to make HIS point, he simply takes the video and superimposes his own thoughts in the form of big red letters across the screen while Annie Leonard is talking. Occasionally, he cuts in and shows a chart or the same image over and over to prove how the Earth's resources are not finite or how our rivers and waterways are cleaner than ever (WHAT??). He displays the source that Annie Leonard has used and tries to dismantle it or say that it isn't valid, and then suggest, that for this reason, the message of the whole video should be disregarded and should definitely be banned from schools.
OOOOoooooooooooooooo this just makes me so MAD! I mean, really, "We're dealing with garbage better than ever before because we have better ways of compacting it." Plllleaaase. Yeah, that's right go out and buy some more stuff cause everything is just fine! I mean how can you say that the U.S. does not consume more than its fare share of resources and every other kind of stuff? How can you say that we (gring@s) do a more efficient job of using our stuff????!!!!! and that we are feeding the rest of the world and without us, they'd all be dead!!!!! OMG. I may have an aneurysm.
I suppose the two things I don't understand are:
a) if you have something to say and it's original, just go ahead and say it. You don't need to take someone else's work, chop it up, interrupt them, scrawl across it, in order to be heard. Just say what you have to say, make your own god damned video.
b) going through and nitpicking apart the statistics and data that this video uses is just debating for the sake of debating in my opinion. All you have to do is OPEN YOUR EYES and look around at what is really going on in this world to see that the way that we're living is absolutely INSANE and that something really does have to change, despite all of the possible advances in technology and science . . . or we are seriously going to big in some deep shh . . . stuff!
Anyway, if you feel like being totally sick to your stomach, you can watch the videos on Glenn Beck's website here (he's divided the Story of Stuff into four parts to criticize each argument). I was only able to watch one and I think I have to go walk around the block now. If you want to find out what Annie Leonard and her crew are doing to fight the lies and keep The Story of Stuff in classrooms visit their blog here. Tell everybody you know about this! It's ridiculous!
P.S. I just read many of the comments on The Story of Stuff website and the majority are mostly pro-GB, saying how they want to protect their children from this awful video and how Annie Leonard should "shut her pie hole" and move to another country. It just makes me really happy that I don't live in the United States anymore. People are so arrogant and rude and self-righteous.I know I have to get better at not getting so tipped over by opinions that differ from mine.
