Upcycling Portal Founding Members Call
POST: Upcycling Portal Founding Members Call
On Friday, June 12th we held our first Founding Members call for this portal. Participants in the call included: Leila Darabi of EverydayTrash.com, Kathi Griffis of Haute Trash, Sergio Beltrán from Universidad de la Tierra, Aerin Dunford and Debbie Frieze of The Berkana Institute. The purpose of this call was to get connected as a community and share with each other the possibilities of what purpose this portal could serve in terms of advancing the field of practice called upcycling (and other individual purposes as well). We also talked a little about why Berkana is hosting this space and the community of practice model. There were three key questions that we addressed:
#1. Who are you? What trash are you most passionate about?
#2. What value do you believe will be created by being together that you can’t get alone? (exploring why have we each have said "yes" to this invitation)
#3. What has to be happening in the portal for you to stay involved?
One of the key points that emerged from the call is that we would like to engage in some sort of collective action where we each do something locally related to the practice of upcycling and then share our experiences.
#4. What kind of collective action might we engage in and share via the Upcycling Portal?
Click here to find out more about our conversation, hopes and ideas for this space. I invite those of you who couldn't make it to the call to take a few moments to answer one or more of these questions (particularly the last two) in the comments section below.
I am planning to host another conference call for folks who weren't available on Friday and would like to engage in a conversation around these questions during the week of July 6th. I'll be in touch with details about this very soon.
Thanks Again!
Aerin

It was great to connect on the phone and hear the other voices interested in upcycling. Thanks for organizing this first community call, I look forward to continued trashy networking!

As a phonecallophobic with enough self-generated projects to keep me busy for a few lifetimes, I got involved here because Aerin asked me nicely, it looked like a good thing and I was assured that my participation could be loosey-goosey. I warned Aerin that I feed my own blog (www.visibletrash.net) at about the rate of decomposing cigarette butts, so not to expect super-regular contributions here either. That said, once I commit to something I'm a loyal participant, and this blog is my outlet for writing about trash in a way that I don't on my own blog, since I like to keep that one heavy on pictures and light on text.
So I'm in it for the writing and to connect with other people who are into trash, like Leila, Ruby and new people I'll meet here. As for the trash I'm most passionate about? Hmmm... that would have to be the trash in our minds that makes us think we need so much STUFF in our lives. STOP IT ALREADY! I know most of us have been trained since birth as good little soldiers in the Consumer Army, but I'm defecting and I hope you will too.
Over and out.

Oh, PS: the photo used to illustrate this entry is a 1998 installation by Tim Noble and Sue Webster called Dirty White Trash (With Gulls). They're collected by Charles Saatchi, ooh la la. Just so you know.
