September 21, 2009
On September 21, 2009, the 27th Annual United Nations’ International Day of Peace will be celebrated with “Peace Day”, a 24-Hour World Peace Celebration & Global Broadcast via the internet, radio and television. This 24-hour multi-media event is designed to celebrate and showcase the accomplishments and on-going activities of organizations around the world working tirelessly to establish world Peace and achieve the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals as agreed upon by all 192 UN Member Nations: www.UN.org/MillenniumGoals
Additionally, the global broadcast will address central issues of our time - Nuclear Proliferation and Global Climate Change. On this 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights we will also give major focus to the need for Human Rights and Economic Justice for all and promote the importance of the Earth Charter and the solutions necessary to save our planet.
The multitudes of organizations working on these vitally important issues rarely receive media attention or recognition for their efforts on behalf of Humanity. Therefore, on Peace Day, we will honor them as the true heroes of our planet and encourage the mass media around the world to recognize the vitally important role they play in the future of our world. The goal of this special event is to educate people around the globe about the most crucial issues facing humanity and to inspire them to take collective action to solve these international problems.
Peace Daywill be the largest and most inclusive International Day of Peace Celebration ever produced, as initiated by the Unity Foundation in association with our leading Peacebuilding Partner: Pathways To Peace.
Co-Chairs for this event are Dr. Robert Muller, former Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Chancellor Emeritus of the University For Peace in Costa Rica. As well as Avon Mattison, Founder and President of Pathways To Peace and Co-Coordinator of the Culture of Peace Initiative (CPI) Annual Report to the UN Secretary-General which documents the International Day of Peace events around the world since 1984.

This interactive website will empower organizations and individuals to participate in the celebration and to take action to create a more peaceful and sustainable planet through a year-round calendar of global events, tools for networking and collaboration, and links to educational resources. The internet content will be subtitled into multiple languages and made available for download around the world. Official UN Peace Bells will ring along the international timeline as Peace Dayunfolds continuously across the globe.
