With very few remaining days left in the current lame duck session of Congress, please urge your Senators to support a vote in the Senate on the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START). The Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved a resolution of advice and consent to ratification with a strong bipartisan vote of 14 – 4 on September 17. The resolution of ratification must now be adopted by the Senate by a two-thirds majority vote.
Since late last year, when the START I Treaty expired, there has been no verifiable nuclear arms control agreement in effect between the world’s two largest nuclear superpowers, the United States and Russia.
If ratified, New START will reduce deployed US and Russian nuclear weapons by about one-third, to the lowest level in more than half a century. It will also cut the number of deployed delivery systems by more than half from START I levels.

With a simple vote, the Senate can help remove hundreds of nuclear warheads currently deployed on ballistic missiles by the United States
But it won’t be easy.
A two-thirds majority vote is needed for passage, andthere is little time left on the Senate schedule. Opposition groups have already mobilized to defeat the treaty.
