Human Rights Day 2011

The United Nations Association USA Tampa Bay Chapter and Global Healing hosted a global SKYPE call to commemerate Human Rights Day.

The call featured two Human Rights acivists, Rev. MacDonald Semberka from Malawi, and Mr. Patras Dewan from Pakistan.


Rev. MacDonald Semberka is an Anglican priest, director of the Maphuziro Foundation,

He is the acting national coordinator of the Malawi Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC), a network of 91 local civil society and non-governmental organizations. He has been at the forefront of coordinating the nationwide protests in Malawi that began July 20, 2011 and are on-going. He is also the Executive Director of Malawi Network of Religious Leaders Living with HIV/AIDS (MANERELA).

He was the target of an arson attack on 10 September 2011 following a similar arson attack at the office of Rafiq Hajat's Institute for Policy Interaction on 3 September 2011.[2] His house was set on fire by petrol bomb.[3]This arson incident came days before the nationwide protests on September 21st, 2011.

In his career he has served as a Chaplain for Hospice Patients, developed the Malawi Education project to educate orphans of HIV-Aids victims, and championed human rights and good governance for the people of Malawi.

He has been a frequent guest at several United Nations conferences and other international gatherings where he has shared his expertise.

During the famine in Malawi, MacDonald successfully took on the difficult and dangerous task of administering a container of food to his Village to keep children alive.  He is one of the true heros of planetary citizens.

 

Mr. Patras Dewan is a human rights activist and the director of Pakistan Global Healing and lives in Lahore, Pakistan

Patras has worked as an agricultural specialist and took an active role in distributing aid for victims of the Pakistani floods of this year.

He has been active in the fight against the abuse of Blasphemy Laws in Pakistan, has assisted people who are accused of Blasphemy in numerous cases, and has helped organize large rally's and events to bring this human rights issue into focus.

Patras currently serves as Prinicipal of Naziran Mary Community Model School.'

He has widely traveled around the world including trips to Sri Lanka, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong, UAE, Quatar, Sweden, and Denmark.

Since assuming the position of Global Healing Director he has organized numerous events including but not limited to:  the protests against Blasphemy laws, the Independence Day Celebration, the celebratiion of the International Day of Peace event, the Stop Violence Against Women event, and the Pakistan Human Rights Day event.
