TELL CONGRESS: LET U.S. LEAD AT THE UNITED NATIONS
URGENT ACTION NEEDED: CALL 202-224-3121 AND TELL YOUR CONGRESSMAN TO VOTE NO ON H.R. 2829, THE ANTI-UN BILL
Dear UNA-USA Members,
On Thursday, the House Foreign Affairs Committee will be voting on a piece of legislation that would end our relationship with the UN as we know it. We need the help of you and your chapter to stop this from happening. Please call your Congressman today at 202-224-3121 — tell them to let the U.S. lead and vote NO on H.R. 2829, the anti-UN bill.
It is so important that your representative hears from you and the 85% of Americans who agree that the U.S. should be actively engaged at the UN. H.R. 2829, the anti-UN bill, would have devastating effects:
-
It would cut U.S. assessed contributions to the UN by 50% — a cut that would severely erode U.S. legitimacy abroad and cause massive new U.S. debt to the UN.
-
America’s failure to pay its dues to the UN will dramatically undermine our ability to protect key national security objectives.
-
It could cut off funding to the UN organizations that respond and take action after a natural disaster or humanitarian crisis such as UNICEF, the World Food Program, and the World Health Organization.
-
It would severely limit the President’s ability to support new or expanded UN peacekeeping missions.
-
It would withhold funds to the Human Rights Council just as the United States has shown the benefits of reforming from within.
-
It cuts funds to the UN entities tasked with implementing the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Please call your Congressman today; a number of chapters have already taken action either via phone or by setting up in-district meetings during the October recess. (See what the UNA-USA Blue Ridge Chapter in Charlottesville, Va., is doing.) Join your fellow members and voice your support for the UN! This bill could have a negative impact on our national security and foreign policy goals, and does not serve our economic interest. If passed, this legislation would degrade our standing in the world, and hurt the millions of people that the UN helps every day.
Please call 202-224-3121 today and tell your Congressman to vote NO on H.R. 2829, the anti-UN bill.
Thank you for taking action,

Patrick Madden
