About MacDonald Semberka the CEO of the Maphunziro Foundation in his own words:

Born on October, 10th, 1968 of a family of ten children (second born), of seven girls and three boys. My mother Grace Patricia is a retired nutritionist while my father Richard Jonathan was a politician (the late), grew up in the village of Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi district and in some towns staying with various relations and lived at their mercy when my father was detained by the dictatorial regime of Dr. Hastings Banda for seven years without trial. I went to school in the said district and others, for both my primary and secondary education. After my secondary education, I trained as a social worker and worker for a year with the Department of Social Welfare among the Mozambican refugees in Mangochi district (1988) before getting called to undertake theological training with the Ecumenical Theological College in Zomba. I graduated with a Credit in 1992 and later ordained in the church of God as a priest of the Anglican Diocese of Southern Malawi. My first posting was to Chilema Ecumenical Training and Conference Centre where I worked as a Programme Director for Laity Formation and Social Transformation for three years (during which period I had the opportunity to specialize on social transformation through a programme facilitated by the Association of Christian Lay Centres in Africa (ACLCA). I did various courses in the field and placements both within and outside Africa including; Germany, The UK, Benin, Kenya, Uganda and Zambia among others. I was later elected Youth Network Coordinator and member of the Board of ACLCA for two years and facilitated the formation of a gathering of young people in the region working in various capacities within their centres.

As a priest, I have also served in various capacities that includes; Parish Priest for Balaka and Zomba Parishes, Director of Training (Training Chaplain for the Diocese), Bishops Chaplain and Personal Assistant and chairperson of Malawi- Usingen Partnership. I am also a trained pastoral counselor, Human Rights trainer and a community mobilizer. I have served on the following Boards as Director: Zomba Theological, Theological Education by Extension, United Religion Initiative Malawi Board, Christian Service Committee, Human Rights Consultative Committee, Malawi Human Rights Resource Centre, Bvumbwe Youth Organization and Labor Resources Centre among others.

I am currently the Chief Executive Officer of Maphunziro Foundation, a non profit non governmental organization working in the areas of Early Childhood care and Development, education, child rights and HIV and AIDS prevention, care and support targeting orphans and vulnerable children in and around Balaka. So far we run and coordinate various sporadic community initiatives but we envisage the establishing a centre for creative education in Balaka as part of the Malawi Education Project. This project targets 500 vulnerable children. The project is working toward construction of school blocks, provision of teaching and learning materials, provision of life skills to children, a library and laboratory for the community as well as a childrens clinic.

We are partners with Global Healing,, Operation Crossroads Africa, Malawi- Hjalpen and many other local initiatives including Council for Non Governmental organizations in Malawi, Human Rights Consultative Committee and Malawi Network of Aids Service Organizations among other.
