Each and every day Men, Women, Boys and Girls are living in fear of HIV and AIDS. Taking this into consideration, Rev. MacDonald Sembereka and a few friends in his parish, in around 1994 thought of helping the people of Traditional Authority Nsamala in Balaka District and Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi District by forming a Non - Governmental Organization which works in these two districts by the name of Maphunziro Foundation (MAF). This was done at a time when numbers of children affected by AIDS were increasing and higher incidences of vulnerability apparently prevalent. The organization was originally intended to empower the communities to be able to uphold and protect the interest of these vulnerable children.
The Organization got registered in 1996 and since that time the organization has been tirelessly working with in school and out of school youth and the general community. In both districts Maphunziro Foundation has formed Anti – AIDS Clubs in Primary Schools, Secondary schools (both private and government schools) and also community based clubs numbering thirty two. Maphunziro foundation mainly targets the youth but this does not mean that the elderly ones are left out because Maphunziro Foundation works with them too.
Among notable things which Maphunziro Foundation is doing in these mentioned areas are:
HIV and AIDS Awareness
HIV and AIDS Prevention
Behaviour Change
Home Based Care
Early Childhood Care and Development
promotion of the protection and upholding of the rights of the child
gender mainstreaming through the encouragement of men’s involvement
On HIV and AIDS awareness and behaviour change the organization has well trained personnel which works with the youth and the community and the organization trained some volunteers from different communities. Maphunziro Foundation has a sound working relationship with Government departments in the two Districts, notable ones being Department of Health, Education, Social Welfare, Youth, Police and Labour. The Organization also works with the NGO’s found in these two Districts namely Save the Children, Concern Universal, Goal Malawi, NICE, Malawi CARER and Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR). Maphunziro is currently a member of the following organisations; Human Rights Consultative Committee, Gender network, Council for non governmental organisations in Malawi and the District Development Committees of both the districts it operates among others.
Maphunziro Foundation is currently busy forming Village AIDS Committees (VAC) with the aim of empowering the community to have responsibility on the chronically ill patients and the elderly in their respective areas, taking care of the orphans and vulnerable children, spreading the HIV / AIDS messages in their areas and having responsibility in the day to day running of the Early Childhood Care and Development Centres established in five areas. These centres were established after seeing the problems the orphans and vulnerable children were facing, most of these problems are there because of HIV / AIDS. We have started the Village AIDS Committee at Tiyanjane which is in the area of Village Headman Mjede, Traditional Authority Nsamala and after fully establishing the VAC; we will do the same with other centres namely:
Chintendere ECD (Chintendere Village, STA Kachenga)
Kaumphawi ECD (Kaumphawi Village, T/A Nsamala)
Mpulula ECD (Mpulula Village, T/A Nsamala)
Mchenga ECD (MchengaVillage, T/A Nsamala)
Plans are underway to open some other centers in the area of Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi District.
Prostitution is one way in which HIV and AIDS is abundantly spreading so the prostitutes both male and female have not been left out. Maphunziro Foundation works with these people and the entire mobile population. It is very pathetic to note that up to this moment some people do not know on how to use condoms, what to do before and after using the condoms. We teach people of the procedures to follow before and after using the condom.
Recently Jones Hopkins Bridge Project equipped Maphunziro Foundation with Journey of Hope or Hope kit which the members of staff are currently using in spreading the behaviour change messages.
For the past three years we have also been receiving visitors from the Operation Crossroads Africa (OCA) an organization based in the United States of America who has been assisting us. Normally they stay with us here for not less than three months annually. The OCA sends 10 people (Volunteers) annually and they work in the areas of HIV / AIDS Awareness, Behaviour Change and Home Based Care programmes in the areas where we operate and they are the ones who teached us and encouraged us to start working with the mobile population.
Currently Maphunziro Foundation is having two projects in the areas of Sub Traditional Authority Amidu in Balaka District and Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi District. In Sub Traditional Authority Amidu we have a HIV / AIDS project with funding from National Aids Commission (NAC) and a Child Rights Project funded by Norwegian Government through Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC) we are also running the same project in the area of Traditional authority Mponda in Mangochi. In the Child Rights Project there an element of HIV / AIDS taking into consideration that each and every child has the right to life and that without life we can not be able to teach these people of their rights so we somehow teach the community on the dangers of HIV and AIDS.
Maphunziro Foundation is slowly growing, this is shown in the way it operates some three years ago Maphunziro Foundation was only working in the area of Traditional Authority Nsamala but as am talking the Organization is operating even in Mangochi District and plans are under way to expand our catchment area to as far as Ntcheu and Machinga Districts.
