Targeted message to Independent Senators

September 19, 2010, 12:40 pm
There are two Independent Senators, Senator Rivest and Senator Cools. The letter to Senator Rivest is just below. Click here for the letter to Senator Cools.

Dear Senator Rivest,

I am writing to you today requesting your support for Bill C-311, the Climate Change Accountability Act. On May 5th, all opposition MPs, except for one, voted in support of the Bill.

As Senate appointee of Prime Minister Mulroney, you are no doubt aware of his environmental legacy. Named the Greenest PM by Corporate Knights, Prime Minister Mulroney recognized the great environmental challenges of his time – acid rain, biodiversity loss and climate change, and demonstrated great statesmanship in addressing these problems.

He did not wait for the United States to act first. On leadership, he had this to say: “So there are three elements to Canada playing an important role on the environment: First, leading by example, claiming the high ground.  Second, engaging the Americans, and at the highest level of government.  Third, involving industry in solutions.”

Industry and the current government have argued that the science-based emissions targets that the Bill sets are too high and will damage the Canadian economy.

As Senator Banks pointed out during the June 1st debate, the same type of argument was made by industry when the Progressive Conservative government proposed removing sulfur from natural gas, lead from oil and sulfur dioxide from smoke stacks. In the end government regulation not only significantly reduced pollution, it provided additional business opportunities for industry.

By supporting science-based targets on greenhouse gas emissions, Canada will not only reduce emissions to safe levels, it will foster greater efficiencies and exciting new industries and business opportunities.

Your vote matters. As you know, Bill C-311 requires the support of 53 Senators. I ask you to please vote for this Bill. If passed into law, Canada will join the European Union in setting science-based emissions targets and demonstrate leadership for the world to follow.

Sincerely

Dear Senator Cools,

I am writing to you today requesting your support for Bill C-311, the Climate Change Accountability Act. On May 5th, all opposition MPs, except for one, voted in support of the Bill.

As you are no doubt aware, there is a growing sense of urgency among Canadians and their elected representatives for action on climate change, one of the most pressing challenges of our time. All opposition parties are in agreement that Canada should set and abide by science-based emissions targets.

Industry and the current government have argued that these targets that the Bill sets are too high and will damage the Canadian economy.
