Despite being a sophisticated, bustling and thriving city, Vancouver is perched between both a vast ocean - the Pacific - and vast expanse of wilderness. A distance of less than ten miles from the downtown core marks the interface of suburb and wilderness. Take a wrong path on a freezing day in the forest that forms Vancouver's northern border and you may never return. It's this proximity - even intimacy - with wildness that reminds Vancouverites of our responsibility to respect and care for the natural world.
