OFH Statement from the Aoishima Reseach Institute:
"After the crisis period, a sustainable rebuilding process must begin in Haiti. The goal of the Committee for a New Haiti is to mobilize grassroots organizations in Haiti to assume a major role in the "renewal" and rebuilding of the country. The objectives of this process include:
The creation of a new world image of Haiti.
A new Haitian consciousness of empowerment v.s. victimization.
The restoration of traditional values.
The process is based upon an ideology of empowerment v.s. paternalism and engages the Haitian people themselves in their own renewal process. As catastropic as the event has been, this is an opportunity for Haiti's renewal and the restoration of a consciousness which enabled the Haitian people in 1804 to overthrow the chains of colonial rule, become the 2nd free nation in the Western Hemisphere, and to become a model for South American independence."
