Is Climate Changing in my Community?
Creating your Community Climate Chronicle!
1. Characterizing your Community
Where do you live?
What do you like about the natural environment where you live?
How do people in your community make their living? Name 3 or 4 important economic activities.
What sports and recreational activities are important?
Is tourism important? Why do people go to your community to visit?
2. Create your Community’s Climate Chronicle
Now using a highlighter, identify the activities above that are weather and climate dependent. identify as many weather and climate parameters are related to the success or failure of these activities. How does the timing of onset of the seasons, means and extremes of temperature, and amount of precipitation impact the activities?
3. Choose any one of the activities you have highlighted.
4. What archival sources are available that can tell you about the history of that activity in your town? Brainstorm. (Bonus: Can you think of any that are not written sources? )
5. Frame a question about this activity that has to do with weather and climate.
