Old Harbor Endeavors to be First Green Start Certified Community in Alaska – Green Star E-News (7/6/12) Green Star’s reach is expanding throughout Alaska, as can be seen by this month’s list of new enrollees. As part of an initiative to certify entire communities, Green Star is teaming up with the Alutiiq Village of Old Harbor to help it become Alaska’s first Green Start Certified community. Read More.
EPA: Marine Diesel Harmful to Human Health – Juneau Empire (7/23/12) A treaty between the U.S. and Canada requires certain ships to burn low-sulfur diesel fuel in a North American Emissions Control Area in Alaska beginning August 1 (goo.gl/ZH2Eo). The rule will result in “slashing harmful particulate pollution that causes heart and asthma attacks in communities near ports and hundreds of miles inland,” according to the EPA’s response. Rural School’s Salad Bar Catches First Lady’s Attention – KTVA (7/18/12) An Alaskan village is being celebrated by the First Lady Wednesday night for its efforts to fight childhood obesity. With some help from Nana Management Services Division, the Kiana School put together a short video about a new salad bar in the school. The video won second place. Kiana will be one of twelve schools in the Northwest Arctic Borough School District that will have a salad bar this upcoming school year. Read more or watch the KTVA news clip.
Born Contaminated – E-Magazine (7/23/12) A new study found that among hundreds of samples of amniotic fluid collected in the 1980s and 1990s, nearly all contained three contaminants of concern. Phthalates and the stain-resisting chemicals detected in the amniotic fluid are known to cause cancer, reproductive disorders and mental health deficiencies. Read More.
Doctors Overlook Chemical Illnesses, Study Finds – Science Daily (7/10/12) Chemical intolerance contributes to the illnesses of 1 in 5 patients but the condition seldom figures in their diagnosis, according to clinical research directed by UT Medicine San Antonia physician. Clinical tools are available to identify chemical intolerance but health care practitioners may not be using them, lead author David Katerndahl, M.D., M.A., said. Patients with chemical intolerance go to the doctor more than others, are prone to having multi-symptoms and are more apt to have to quit their job due to physical impairment, the authors said.
